Canon EOS 40D

First things first. What is EOS? We are talking about optics and cameras, so it is simple to demystify, EOS is Electro Optic System. Canon EOS 40D belongs to the auto-focus line of SLR cameras. No! SLR does not mean Self Loading Rifle or Stupid Long Reel. It is Single Lens Reflex. EOS is also supposed to denote the Greek goddess of dawn. That said, now about the camera itself.
Looks beautiful, doesn't it? This camera has been a long time coming and is successor to EOS 30D. Few improvements over 30D include increase in the pixel count, from 8MP to 10MP. There is also a built in dust cleaning system in the body itself. Unlike most other digital cameras, the sensor here is not a CCD but a CMOS sensor. In a nutshell, the CMOS pictures have far superior detailing than the CCD sensors. In fact, the mega pixel count on a CMOS sensor and CCD sensor is not same at all. So if some one is telling you about a 2MP CMOS camera, it will be far far superior to a 2MP CCD camera. All your run of the mill stuff available is based on CCD sensors.
CMOS sensor gives the camera a wide dynamic range, retaining subtle details in shadow and highlight areas. An improved pixel design consisting of larger micro lenses over each pixel and on-chip noise reduction ensure clean, crisp images throughout the range of ISO 3200. Images are converted at 14 bits for finer gradations and superior colour reproduction.

The high precision AF system employs 9 cross type points for precise focusing on both horizontal and vertical planes. The central AF point offers sensitivity up to f/2.8. Points are spread out across the AF frame to better accommodate off-center subjects.

With EOS series, Canon has brought in a plethora of enhancements. In fact Canon has been the pioneer in the EOS field since 1987 when they released the first EOS camera. EOS cameras with their EF lenses did not rely on any mechanical linkages between body and lens. Canon were the first maker to release lenses containing fast and silent focusing ultrasonic auto-focus motors. Starting 2000, when they introduced the D30, their first fully in-house product, Canon have brought in various changes and enhancements using their in house knowledge base to great effect. Some features you might be interested in are

3.0" LCD

The bright 3.0" LCD provides pin-sharp definition for checking focus and composition, with 10x magnification for finer details. When shooting from awkward positions, Live View mode gives you the option of framing your image from the LCD.

DIGIC III processor

Fast and highly accurate, DIGIC III processes images at 14 bits for finer colour gradations. DIGIC III minimizes power consumption for prolonged battery life and delivers instant 0.15 second start up time.

EOS Integrated Cleaning System

Canon’s built-in dust prevention and cleaning system works to keep the sensor clean. A combination of technologies reduces, repels and removes dust and includes a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit that shakes dust from the sensor with each power on.

Picture Style

Picture Style presets provide easy control over image processing parameters. Each style offers a different colour response. Picture Style presets are customizable in-camera or through the supplied Picture Style Editor software.

Connectivity
Video Out allows reviewing on a TV screen. Connect with USB 2.0 Hi-speed for fast data transfers.

All those specs look mouth watering indeed. But did i mention the price? Hold on to your pockets. This is gonna cost you anywhere between INR 75, 000 and 80, 000 and burn a hole right through your pockets. Come to think of it, wouldn't it be better if i bought a Video Camera with DVD facility instead? Take your pick, I say. A video camera can never double for a still camera and vice versa. So if you are an enthusiast or a professional who really loves to take good photographs, then this is the top of the line product here. You might get cheaper D-SLR options from Sony, Nikon or Kodak, but, in my precious view, Canon rules the roost!
