AeroGel

The name itself is full of so many possibilities. To be sure, first i thought it was some thing to do with the Aero Glass theme of Windows Vista. Man, was i wrong! They are using this stuff in Mars Rover. Don't tell me you don't know what Mars Rover is! No, it is not a cousin of Land Rover . It is that thing they sent to Mars, looking for little green men.
Well, they needed to seal (By "They", i mean NASA dudes), the processor and memory stuff fitted in theMars Rover into a box that could withstand all kinds insanities of temperature. AeroGel was the answer. Aerogel is a low-density solid state material derived from gel in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with gas. It is nick named "Frozen Smoke." Wow! I like that! Sounds like "Ze Ole Rock Anthem."
AeroGels are highly efficient thermal insulators. Now, there are different types of AeroGels, like Silica, Metal or carbon, each with its own insulative properties. If you are going to handle them, be very careful. They have strong desiccant properties and can leave your hand looking brittle and scaly. Man, am still feeling quite awed by this peace of technology. Is it gonna show up soon in our lives? I don't know. I believe it is pretty costly to manufacture and its applications in everyday domestic life, are still relatively unknown. Are we living in stone age? No, we are living in AeroGel age!
